SBM TECH LTD. is at the forefront of advanced recycling technologies, specializing in the sustainable processing of End-of-Life (EOL) Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIB) and the production of precursor Cathode Active Materials (pCAM) and Cathode Active Materials (CAM) from black mass. Our cutting-edge technology caters to the diverse needs of battery producers, spent battery collectors, and black mass producers, ensuring efficient and environmentally friendly recycling and material production solutions.

Our process involves first physically pre-treating spent batteries, then using hydrometallurgy to extract and separate metals so that they can be reused

Using mechanical processes, our recycling technique begins with the physcial disassembly and separation of battery components, optimizing for maximum material recovery of valuable metals and minimal environmental impact. This results in a mixture of cathode, carbon black and PVDF called black mass. Our technology enables the efficient physical processing of both ternary (NMC) batteries and LFP batteries.

Closing the battery supply chain loop

Once the battery components have been processed into black mass, SBM TECH LTD. utilizes state-of-the-art hydrometallurgical processes to extract valuable metals that can be reused to produce new batteries. The key steps include:

Leaching

The black mass undergoes a controlled leaching process using eco-friendly acids to dissolve the metal content into an aqueous solution. Our proprietary leaching techniques ensure high recovery rates and minimal waste generation.

Purification and Separation

The leach solution is purified through a series of advanced processes, including solvent extraction, ion exchange, and precipitation, to remove impurities and separate individual metal ions. This step is crucial for ensuring the high purity of the recovered metals.

Metal Recovery

The purified metals are recovered from the solution through electro-winning or crystallization, resulting in high-purity nickel, manganese, cobalt, and lithium ready for reuse in various industrial applications.

Tailored solutions to match your needs

Depending on the needs of the customers, we can also produce high-quality pCAM and CAM directly from black mass. Our integrated process involves:

As with our hydrometallurgical process, end-of-life batteries are first physically processed to produce black mass.

Black Mass

Similar to our hydrometallurgical process, the black mass is subjected to an acid leaching process to dissolve the metal content into a solution.

Leaching

The leach solution undergoes rigorous purification to ensure the removal of impurities and the precise separation of nickel, manganese, and cobalt ions.

Purification

Purified metal ions are co-precipitated to form a mixed hydroxide or carbonate precursor, precisely controlled for optimal NMC performance.

Co-Purification

The precursor undergoes high-temperature calcination to transform into the final CAM, ensuring optimal crystallinity and electrochemical properties.

Calcination

End material is high-quality cathode active material (CAM) ideal for use in next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
